Vape Boss: Disposable Vape Ban Will Not Work

We have previously reported on the Government’s plans regarding vapes and tobacco.

Tadeu Marroco, the Chief Executive of British American Tobacco (BAT) has criticised those plans saying that banning disposable vapes will not be “effective.”

Pointing to similar bans overseas, Mr Marroco questioned their efficacy - “In Australia they have banned the whole category, and the amount of teenagers using the illegal market is very high. The same is happening in Brazil.” Instead, Mr Marocco suggested a retail licence like the type required to sell alcohol.

Countering, Deborah Arnott from anti-smoking charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) said, “The ban on disposables can be made to work but it requires tough enforcement not just in shops but at the border to prevent illegal imports.”

Last week the Government published the Tobacco and Vapes Bill which, if enacted in its current form, will ban the sale of tobacco to anyone born after 2009 and bring in on-the-spot fines for retailers caught selling to under-18s.

Law correct at the date of publication.
